Purchasing Music Online? Can't Post

Has anybody had success with purchasing music online? I think that $.99 is a fair price to buy the rights to a song, but I've had such a frustrating experience...

I went to realplayer's music store... Well, first, I had to download and install the realplayer... No big deal, but a pain in the butt. Then, I went to the Real Music Store, opened an account (complete with CC info, etc.) and bought a song. Pretty easy, right?...

Well, the downloaded file is a special Real file format (.rax) that won't play on my Rio MP3 device and one that my CD burning software doesn't recognize as a valid file format. I can use RealPlayer to play the file on my computer or even to burn an audio CD, but I can't combine this song with my other mp3's (that I legally ripped from albums I've purchased) into a mix CD.

SO... I searched around and saw that if I upgraded my Real membership (more $$$) I could convert to other file formats.... Well, it didn't work. I unlocked the file conversion utilities in the RealPlayer by signing up for the premium service, but it turns out the .rax file that I bought has some built-in use-restrictions that prohibit me from using that utility on THAT particular file...

What a bunch of bull!!

Does anybody know where I can go and legally buy my favorite songs for $1.00 or less and get them in full blown .wav or high fidelity mp3 format without any restrictions and without HUGE hassles?

If the damned music industry is so concerned about piracy, why is it so hard to do this legally!! I'm so frustrated that I just want to go use some P2P software and go get it for free!!

I agree with you. The Realplayer setup/arrangement is a piece of cr@p.

$0.99 for a song IS a great deal. When I buy CDs it's usually only for a few (sometimes only 1/2) of the songs on it. $0.99 per song is a fair price.

But the service set up by Real is so cumbersome that it defeats the whole purpose of making music readily available, cost effective, AND convenient.

Convenient, this Real deal is not! The player is slow. It crashes after cycling through my playlist 3-4 times. It constantly causes buffer under run problems when trying to burn a CD. When the CD does burn successfully, some of the tracks (songs) can't even be played. The "license" to convert the downloaded track to MP3 is completely useless unless you pay more money to Real for the "premium" version of their Realplayer.

For consumers like me, the reasons for buying music on-line and paying for a digital file are:
1) Low Cost: I only pay for the tracks that I want;
2) Portability: I can play the music on my computer, my MP3 player, my home stereo, or my car stereo;
3) Convenience: I can listen to the music before I buy it. And when I do decide to buy it, I can do so at my time--anytime.

The deal set up by Real fails to meet all three. I wonder what the deal with Walmart is like?

This service offered by REALONE is crap on the real. It makes no sense to make a song available for purchase and then you cannot convert the media nor burn it to a CD. I am so disappointed with REALONE for their music store media file type that I have cancelled my subscription with them.
