The International Songwriting Competition (ISC) is pleased to announce its 2007 winners, including the winners in the R&B/Hip-Hop category. The R&B/Hip-Hop winners include Kallen Saczkowski (Katchphraze) and Daryl Ringwald from Oakville, ON, Canada, for their song “Welcome To The Cold” (First Place); Robin Hooper, Golmorad Moshiri, Bryan Trevitt, Steve Messinger, David Coles, and Kevin Coles (Sweatshop Union) from Vancouver, BC, Canada, for their song “Try” (Second Place); and Grover Zinn (Zinndeadly), Diaro Foster (Big Dro), and Mandolyn Ludlum (Mystic) for their song “Choose One” (Third Place). Renowned for its prestigious celebrity judges, ISC received over 15,000 songs from amateur and professional songwriters from 100 countries worldwide, confirming ISC's status as the leading global songwriting event. In fact, for the first time in the competition's history, the majority of winners (59%) come from outside the USA. More than $150,000 in cash and prizes is shared among the 59 winners, including an overall Grand Prize of $25,000 (US) cash, the largest cash Grand Prize of any songwriting competition in the world, and $30,000 in merchandise and services. Candace Avery, Founder and Director of ISC, says, “ISC’s R&B/Hip-Hop winners are right in the pocket of what’s making it in the music industry, and we look forward to their future success. ISC’s recognition of their songwriting skill is a well-deserved honor, and ISC is thrilled to provide the platform to make this happen for them.” Kallen Saczkowski, better known as Katchphraze, from Oakville, ON, Canada, is awarded First Place in the R&B/Hip-Hop category for his song (co-written by Daryl Ringwald) “Welcome To The Cold”. Inspired by many genres of music, his powerful style clearly stood out to the ISC judges. In the summer of 2001, Katchphraze recorded an EP entitled Ones N Toos. Later that year, Katchphraze relocated across the country to Vancouver Island, where he began building a solid underground fan base and performing with fellow Canadian talent (and ISC winner) Sweatshop Union, Moka Only, and Swollen Members. Katchphraze’s full-length album Eye Can See Now was released in August, 2007. Second Place honors are awarded to Sweatshop Union (Robin Hooper, Golmorad Moshiri, Bryan Trevitt, Steve Messinger, David Coles, and Kevin Coles) from Vancouver, BC, Canada, for their song “Try”. With the release of their highly acclaimed third album, United We Fall (2005), Sweatshop Union has built some serious momentum. They have toured with Jurassic 5, Blackalicious, the Black Eyed Peas, and many others. The group has received nominations for two Juno Awards, a Canadian Radio Music Award, and two MuchMusic Video Awards. The group will be releasing their new album, Water Street, later in 2008. Grover Zinn (Zinndeadly), Diaro Foster (Big Dro), and Mandolyn Ludlum (Mystic) are awarded Third Place for their song “Choose One”. Grover Zinn from Los Angeles, CA, USA, better known as Zinndeadly, has carved out an impressive musical career over the last ten years. Responsible for the music behind Eminem's first Top 10 radio hit, Zinn has made records with a number of Grammy-nominated rappers such as Mystic, Planet Asia and Killah Priest, and has collaborated with such hip-hop luminaries such as Cut Chemist (Jurassic 5), Canibus and Iriscience (Dilated Peoples). Mandolyn Ludlum, better known as Mystic, got her start when she collaborated with MC The Angel and toured with Digital Underground, appearing on Digital Underground's album Who Got The Gravy. Mystic released her debut album, Cuts for Luck and Scars for Freedom, in 2001. The track "W," featuring her collaboration with Planet Asia, was nominated for a Grammy in 2001 for Best Rap/Sung Collaboration. In 2007 Mystic toured throughout Europe with Dave Ghetto, Hezekiah, and DJ Munch and is currently working on her second album. In addition to these winners, 11 other R&B/Hip-Hop songs garnered an Honorable Mention in the category: “Anythin 4 U” – Cheryline Lim / Ratt Pack (Che'Nelle) – Edgewater, NJ, USA “Babylone (RAY RAY MIX)” – Raymond Rousseau / Alain Banag (OL1KU and Ray Ray) – Montreal, QC, Canada “Ball And Chain” – Papa Adofo / Colin Harris (Cuban Friday featuring Saya) – Ghana “Bumper” – Mihai Ogasanu / Tahliah Debrett (Tahliah) – Bucharest, Romania “La Receta” – David Lewis Keimonti Thomas (Kemo the Blaxican) – Norwalk, CA, USA “Mamacita” – Daniel James De La Torre / Dwain Victorian / James Pettie (DeweyPC) – Long Beach, CA, USA “Rainfall” – Christopher Jenkins / A'shanti Jenkins / Kyle Bluff (Nonpareilyx) – Orange County, CA, USA “Str8 Wylin'” – LaDerrick Coleman / Bryan Rogers / Rich Warren / Chad Moore/Ryan Moore (EQ-Live) – Racine, WI, USA “That’s Gangsta” – Hardhead – Moreno Valley, CA, USA “The Violin's Cry” – Mahyar Jamy Bagheri (Cia Gomes Featuring Jamy Bagheri) – Jambes, Namur, Belgium “Want It” – Stefan Eliades (Lyrical Eye Featuring Elpnicki) – Nicosia, Cyprus Along with the R&B/Hip-Hop category, winners in all 19 categories are represented by songwriters from all over the world. The 2007 Grand Prize is awarded to Eduard Glumov (Aktobe, Kazakhstan) and Z. Mulls (Swarthmore, PA, USA) for their song “I’m Not Your Friend.” The song, entered in the Rock category, was written by Glumov with lyrics provided by Z. Mulls of Swarthmore, PA, USA. This collaboration – from Kazakhstan to the USA – from one side of the globe to the other – perfectly reflects ISC’s mission of creating a competition that is inclusive of songwriters worldwide. Glumov, a singer/songwriter, and Z. Mulls, a lyricist, met each other on MusesMuse.com, a songwriting resource website, and their musical collaboration produced the winning song.
